Which Candle Box Should You Choose?
Start with the candle, not the box. A jar candle, a pillar, a tealight and a taper all need different things, and the structure follows from that.
Build this as a three column table on the page. Candle type, what it needs, the box that suits it.
- Jar candle. Holds a heavy glass vessel still. Rigid or cardboard box cut to the jar, with an insert.
- Pillar candle. Protects a soft wax surface from scuffing. Snug tube or carton, nothing loose.
- Tealight. Sold in multiples, so needs partitions. Tray or carton with dividers.
- Votive. Small glass, easy to lose in a big box. Close fitting carton.
- Taper. Long and fragile, snaps easily. Long narrow box with support along its length.
- Tin. Already protected, so presentation matters more. Sleeve or printed carton.
- Wax melt. Flat and segmented. Shallow carton or clamshell.
For jars there are candle jar boxes and jar candle boxes. For pillar candles there is pillar candle packaging and black pillar boxes. Smaller formats have their own: tealight candle boxes, votive candle boxes, taper candle boxes, candle tins, and wax melt packaging.
Then pick how the box opens. Two piece boxes lift apart and suit gifting. Drawer style boxes slide out of a sleeve. Magnetic boxes snap shut and survive repeated opening on a counter. Tray and sleeve boxes put the branding on the sleeve and the candle in the tray.
For volume lines, reverse tuck boxes and autolock boxes ship flat and cost the least per unit. An autolock base locks itself when you pop the box open, which saves time if you are packing by hand.
Candle boxes with a window let a buyer see the wax color before opening. Round, square, cube and pyramid shapes exist where the shelf needs something that is not another rectangle, and candle tube packaging suits pillars and tapers.
For anything posted to a customer, use candle mailer boxes or candle shipping boxes rather than a retail carton. And for candles kept on open display, candle dust covers keep the wax clean without hiding it.

What Size Box Does Your Candle Need?
Candle makers think in centiliters, so that is where we start. The common retail jar sizes have boxes already: a 9cl candle box for votive and sample sizes, a 30cl kraft candle box for the standard retail jar, and 50cl candle boxes for three wick and large format. There is also a standard size candle box if your jar is a common shape.
If your jar is not one of those, send three things:
- Jar height with the lid on, and again without it
- Jar diameter at its widest point, which is often the rim rather than the base
- Whether the lid ships on the candle or separately
The lid is what people forget. A 30cl jar with a chunky wooden lid is taller than a 30cl jar without one, and a box cut to the wrong height either crushes the lid or lets the jar rattle.
Diameter matters more than volume. Two 30cl jars from different suppliers can be different widths, one tall and narrow, one short and wide, and they do not share a box. Measure the jar you actually buy.
For tealights and multipacks, tell us how many go in one box and whether they sit in a row or a grid. That decides the partitions more than the outer size does.

What Materials and Finishes Are Available?
Custom candle boxes are made from cardstock, kraft, cardboard, corrugated, or rigid board. Printing is full color CMYK, Pantone for exact brand colors, or unprinted. Finishes include matte and gloss lamination, Spot UV, embossing, and gold or silver foil.
Weight decides the board more than looks do. A filled 30cl glass jar is heavy, and cardstock that suits a tealight pack will sag under it. Corrugated and cardboard carry weight better, and rigid board is the stiffest of all, which is why luxury candle packaging uses it.
Kraft candle boxes have a natural brown look that suits soy, small batch and eco friendly lines. Paper candle boxes are the lightest option for small candles.
For finishing, foiling puts a metallic layer on a logo, and Spot UV adds shine to one part of a matte design so a name lifts off the surface.
Which finishes are available depends on the board and the style you pick. Not every finish works on every material, and we will say so when a combination will not hold up.
Inserts Are Not Optional for Glass
A candle in a box that is slightly too big will move, and glass that moves against board chips at the rim. That is the single most common reason a candle arrives damaged.
Candle boxes with inserts hold the jar in one position so nothing shifts. For multipacks and gift sets, partitions keep each candle in its own cavity rather than knocking against its neighbor. If you are shipping direct to customers, treat the insert as part of the box rather than an extra.
Who These Boxes Are For
Candle makers selling at markets and fairs need boxes that stack, store flat between events, and survive being handled all day.
Online sellers have the opposite problem, because every box travels alone through a courier network. Candle boxes for ecommerce and shipping boxes are built for that, and unboxing videos mean the inside of the box matters as much as the outside.
Boutiques and retail buyers care about shelf presence, since candles sit in rows where the box is the only thing separating one soy jar from another. A presentation box or luxury box does that work.

- Send your jar size or candle dimensions, the quantity, the style you have in mind, and your artwork if you have it. We reply within one business day.
- We come back with the board, box style, insert, print method, and finish we recommend, plus a price for the job.
- We prepare or check your artwork and dieline. There are no design fees, and you get a free 3D mockup so you can see the box before approving it.
- Nothing goes to production until you sign off the artwork.
- Before bulk production starts we send a video of your actual packaging. You are looking at the finished box rather than a render, while there is still time to change something.
- Standard production is 6 to 8 business days after final artwork approval. Rush production is 3 to 5 business days when approved, with a 10 percent surcharge. Time spent waiting on artwork or approval does not count as production time.
- Free standard shipping worldwide. Standard transit is 10 to 15 business days after production. Expedited transit is 7 to 10 business days for qualifying destinations, with a 10 percent surcharge.
