How Much Is 8 Ounces in Cups? Liquid, Dry and Containers

By Anthony Kim • October 13, 2026

Eight fluid ounces is 1 US cup. That is a volume, the same as 16 tablespoons or about 236.6 mL. Eight ounces by weight is different: it is 226.8 grams, and the number of cups it fills depends on the food. So before you convert 8 ounces in cups, check whether the recipe or label means fluid ounces (fl oz) or weight (net wt). If you are choosing packaging, such as cream jar boxes, the “8 oz” on a filled product’s label tells you what is inside, not how big the jar is.

8 Fluid Ounces in Cups and Other Units

8 US fluid ounces equalsAmount
Cups1
Tablespoons16
Teaspoons48
Pints1/2
Quarts1/4
Gallons1/16
Milliliters236.59

These are computed from NIST’s conversion factors for the US cup (236.5882 mL), fluid ounce (29.57353 mL), tablespoon, teaspoon, pint, quart and gallon, read in October 2026. A fluid ounce is 2 tablespoons, so a packaging guide’s claim that an ounce is 4 tablespoons doubles the real figure.

8 Ounces by Weight in Cups

An ounce of weight is not an ounce of volume. Eight ounces by weight is 226.80 grams, and USDA’s food data gives a different weight for a cup of each food:

FoodUSDA weight of 1 cupCups in 8 oz (226.80 g)
All purpose flour125 g1.81
Granulated sugar200 g1.13
Long grain white rice, raw185 g1.23
Tap water237 g for 8 fl oz0.96

Weights are from USDA FoodData Central’s standard reference entries; the cup counts are computed. So 8 fluid ounces of water weighs 237 grams, about 8.36 ounces, a little more than 8 ounces by weight. For exact amounts of dry food, weigh it on a scale rather than filling a cup.

Is 8 Ounces a Serving, or Travel Size?

Is 8 Ounces a Serving, or Travel Size
  • Serving. FDA’s reference amounts for nutrition labels, as read in October 2026 (21 CFR 101.12), set 12 fl oz (360 mL) for ordinary beverages and water, and for sweetened coffee or tea. Eight fluid ounces is the reference for milk and milk based drinks, which FDA writes as “1 cup (240 mL); 8 fl oz (240 mL)”.
  • Travel. TSA limits carry on liquids to containers of 3.4 ounces (100 mL) or less per item. An 8 oz bottle goes in checked baggage, unless an exemption such as medication applies.

What “8 oz” on a Container Means

On a US food label, “8 fl oz” or “net wt 8 oz” states the net quantity of contents. It does not state how much the container can hold, and a container can hold more than its contents. How a label writes ounces of weight and of volume is covered in our grams in an ounce post.

FDA’s slack fill rule (21 CFR 100.100) calls that difference slack fill: “the difference between the actual capacity of a container and the volume of product contained therein.” If a shopper cannot see the contents fully, empty space can make a food misbranded, unless it serves one of six purposes the rule lists:

  1. Protecting the contents.
  2. The needs of the machines that enclose the contents.
  3. Unavoidable product settling during shipping and handling.
  4. A specific function of the package, such as preparing the food, made clear to the shopper.
  5. A reusable container with significant value of its own, such as a gift container meant for further use.
  6. A package that cannot be filled further or made smaller, for example to fit the required label.

So when you choose an 8 oz container, fill it with 8 ounces of your actual product first, then check how much space is left and why.

Boxes for 8 oz Jars and Bottles

Boxes for 8 oz Jars and Bottles

Measure the jar or bottle with its lid on, then size the box around it, as with candle jar boxes built for a glass jar. An insert holds the product in one position rather than letting it shift in transit. Tell us what goes inside and we will confirm which materials suit it at quote.
