Rigid vs Folding Cartons: How Each Is Made, Shipped and Packed

By Anthony Kim • October 27, 2026

Rigid vs folding cartons comes down first to one difference. Both are paperboard, but a folding carton is shipped flat and formed by whoever packs it, by hand or on a machine, while a rigid box arrives already built. That shapes how the boxes are stored and packed. Carton board also has limits, on its thickness and on the weight it holds.

How a Folding Carton Is Made and Arrives

Wikipedia’s folding carton entry describes the process. The paperboard is printed, laminated, cut, then folded and glued. The finished cartons are “shipped flat to a packager, which has its own machinery to fold the carton into its final shape.” The print goes straight onto the board, before it is cut.

The format is old. The entry dates mass production to 1879 at the Robert Gair Company in Brooklyn, where a press accident showed that printing and cutting could be done on one machine.

What arrives at your door is a stack of flat, glued cartons. Someone still has to open each one, fill it and close it. On a packing line, a cartoning machine does that, and the entry is clear that “cartons need to be compatible with the expected packaging machinery.”

Straight tuck end, reverse tuck end and auto bottom styles are folding carton styles.

How a Rigid Box Arrives

A rigid box comes the other way. Wikipedia’s cardboard box entry says set up boxes cannot fold flat and arrive already assembled. Nobody erects a rigid box at the packing stage; the product goes into a box that is already a box. Its print can sit on a wrap glued over the board rather than on the board itself; our guide to how rigid boxes are made covers that build.

The Board, and the Weight Each Suits

Board. Wikipedia’s paperboard entry describes folding boxboard as “a bending grade capable of being scored and bending without fracture.” A rigid box uses board that is not meant to bend. Our guide to chipboard covers bending and nonbending grades in detail.

Thickness. The folding carton entry puts a ceiling on carton board: “because of the limitations of cutting machinery, the thickness of the board is limited to 0.81 mm (0.032 in).”

Weight. The same entry says folding cartons “are generally limited to holding a few pounds or kilograms of material.” A product heavier than that needs a different build, so give the box maker the filled weight.

Stiffness. On a packing line, stiffness matters as well as strength. The paperboard entry notes that it “affects the ability of cartons to run smoothly through the machine that erects, fills and closes them.”

Which One Fits Your Product?

  1. You pack on a cartoning line, or plan to. A folding carton is the format the machine is built for. Give the carton maker your machine’s details so the board and style suit it.
  2. Your product weighs more than a few pounds. Look past a folding carton, and give the box maker the filled weight.
  3. You pack by hand, and the box is part of the product’s presentation. A rigid box saves the erecting step and is covered in our guide to the benefits of rigid boxes.
  4. You want a rigid box but cannot store built boxes. Collapsible rigid boxes ship flat and stand up when needed; our guide to foldable rigid boxes explains how.

Custom Boxes Deals makes both rigid boxes and folding carton styles; see our box styles. Pricing is quoted per project after we review your brief. Give us the filled weight and how it travels, and we confirm the board at quote. Our minimum order is 100 boxes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a folding carton the same as a cardboard box?

People call it one, but Wikipedia’s cardboard box entry lists several kinds under that name, including corrugated shipping boxes, folding cartons made of paperboard, and set up boxes, the rigid kind.

How much weight can a folding carton hold?

Wikipedia’s folding carton entry says generally a few pounds or kilograms. Give us the filled weight and how it travels, and we confirm the board at quote.

Is a folding carton cheaper than a rigid box?

We quote each project from its size, build and quantity, and do not rank the two formats on price.

Can a folding carton be called biodegradable?

Only with evidence and a qualifier, if the carton is likely to be landfilled. The FTC’s rule on that claim is covered in the mylar vs rigid packaging guide.
